Set against the rugged beauty of Ireland’s Atlantic coast, The Green Road by Anne Enright masterfully intertwines themes of family, selfishness, and compassion. From the Booker Prize-winning author, this novel explores the profound and often painful dynamics within a family that is simultaneously close-knit and fractured. With Enright’s signature eloquence and keen observational prowess, the narrative delves into the complexity of familial love and individual desire.

Four adult siblings—Hanna, Dan, Constance, and Emmet—find themselves converging once again at their childhood home on the west coast of Ireland. They return for what could be their last Christmas together in the family house, which their mother, Rosaleen, has decided to sell. This reunion forces the characters to navigate a turbulent sea of memories and emotions. Rosaleen, a matriarch struggling with her own way of expressing love, makes a desperate final act that compels her children to reevaluate their past and the intricate bonds that tie them together.

As the weathered walls of their old home witness moments of poignant humour and heartrending revelation, Enright carefully peels away layers of resentment, misunderstanding, and sorrow. The Green Road is a temperamentally rich and absorbing portrait of a family in crisis, struggling with the passage of time and the ghosts of their collective history.

Shortlisted for the 2015 Costa Novel Award and the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction 2016, and longlisted for the 2015 Man Booker Prize, The Green Road has garnered critical acclaim for its emotional depth and narrative prowess. It was also honoured as the Irish Novel of the Year in 2015.

This brilliantly crafted novel was named one of The Guardian's 100 Best Books of the 21st Century, a testament to its enduring resonance and literary significance. Anne Enright once again affirms her place as a vital voice in contemporary fiction, presenting a story that is as hauntingly beautiful as it is unflinchingly real.
